The circularity of life is expressed throughout this scene. The reflection of the stars
in the pool of water and the ripples caused by the moose drinking feed into the
ripples of the pool, creating a universe within a universe. The campers sit by the fire
above ground, while the skeleton lies in a hammock of tree roots with his dog under
his arm, sharing the underground world with snuggling foxes and a family of rabbits.
Father rabbit is looking at the campers above. The loyal dog has been a popular
theme in caskets throughout history, particularly in the English cathedrals where a
dog is often found at the feet of the bishops on carved marble sarcophagi.
